The Song That Brought Me Marlowe

What’s a song that changed your life?

Today’s prompt asks for a song that changed my life. For me, it’s “Lights” by Myon & Shane 54.

It was the song that built the slow burn between Marlowe and Trevor.

From then on, the song went everywhere with me. I burned it onto a CD with a handful of other tracks and played it in the car constantly. It ran in my office while I wrote, and on headphones while I worked on my little 11″ MacBook Air, back before that laptop got too old to keep up.

That’s the thing about writing music. It isn’t background. It’s the key that lets you back into the story when you’ve been away from it. Every time “Lights” came on, I was back in Marlowe’s world.

That world became The Republic of McCoy. If you want to hear the rest of what I listened to while writing it, the full playlist is here.

It includes death of loved ones, grief and a funeral, bodies of the dead used without consent, a request for assisted death, suicide, a serious workplace accident, violence and peril, explosions and mass destruction, sexual content, and profanity.
